Alpine Services was recently contacted by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission concerning two athletic fields which had surface stone problems and were declared unsafe.
The fields were screened using Alpine’s modified Cherrington beach cleaner. The fields were first loosened 4-5” deep and then we used a Harley Rock Rake to further loosen the soil and dislodge numerous stones from the packed clay. The Harley pulverized the soil which enhanced the screening speed. After screening, approximately four large truck loads of stones were hauled from the site, ranging from ¾-4” in diameter.
The fields then were re-graded and had compost applied to them. These athletic fields are now much softer and considerably safer without the rocks that had been on the playing surface.
