A university was in a bind because its new, artificial-turf baseball infield was poorly graded and had standing water. The school was sick about the situation and the prospect of tearing out and replacing a brand new field. Grove Teates was brought in as an athletic field consultant. Although it had never been tried before, Teates thought he just might be able to carefully remove the turf, grade the field and replace the original turf. But before work could start, he needed to invent new equipment that could take up, move and re-install the turf.
The NFL team was excited about its new stadium and field. The plans called for the field to be installed 36 feet below grade. The project seemed to be progressing well until excavators hit groundwater that no one knew about. Soon it was apparent that water would be a major issue. Three creeks were running under the soon-to-be field. Grove Teates was called in to keep the project moving forward. In spite of daily challenges, the field was finished three hours before the scheduled first game.
